# Gemma with the manifests' signatures checked: the 2026-09 bench re-run, 2026-09-27

> personal result on this device, not a benchmark number

Every earlier Gemma run in `docs/bench` (`gemma-on-a-pi-2026-09`, direct, from 03:30Z; `gemma-through-the-console-2026-09`, through a throwaway
console, from 06:18Z; `gemma-on-the-live-rover-2026-09-27`, through the live rover console, from 15:24Z; all on 2026-09-27 UTC) told each model
`INVALID manifest signature: signature present but no key resolver to verify it` about two
good signatures, because the bench had no key resolver. This run checks both manifests
against their public keys first, runs only behind a registry preflight, and writes a chained
results file. Same Pi, same Ollama, same model digests, same cases, same seed.

**The short answer.** The one line the models are told about the signature changed, and
nothing else in the request did. Not one verdict moved. There are 96 case-by-case
comparisons of a Gemma turn: 60 direct, 24 against the 06:18Z console run and 12 against the
15:24Z live-console run. In every one the case passed or failed exactly as before, and the model
drafted the same capability or answered, as before. Most replies are worded differently, because a fixed seed
only reproduces a sample when the prompt is byte-identical.

**Changed:**
- **What the models are told.** One line of the system instructions, per robot:
  `- INVALID manifest signature: signature present but no key resolver to verify it` became
  `- signed manifest (kid rover-manifest-2026)` (Bob: `bob-manifest-2026`). The instructions'
  sha256 went from `a25bc159a0ba...` to `e3b6b325364a...` (rover, guided) and from
  `4011517c5361...` to `68a0c76f3175...` (Bob, guided). The `format` schema, the options and
  every user turn are byte-identical. That was checked with `gemma-bench body`, which sends
  nothing: the current tool, given the old fixtures and no keys, reproduces the 2026-09
  sha256s exactly.
- **The words.** Most replies differ in wording (the last column). The seed is fixed at 42, so
  a byte-identical prompt draws the same sample, and a prompt one line different draws a
  different one.
- **E2B's two routes now agree word for word.** Through the console, E2B drew the same final
  content as direct in 12 of 12 cases. In the 06:18Z console run that was 4 of 12, in a block that loaded
  the model three times. Here it loaded once per route. That fits the guess made then (reloads
  change which turns re-read the whole prompt), but this run does not prove it.
- **The rover's manifest file.** It was re-signed for its real wheels (`6043c5e7...` became
  `a486cfbc...`: PCA9685Drive, hardware present). That did not reach the models: with
  `--keys`, the old and new rover fixtures give the same instructions sha256. The grounding does
  not carry the drive backend.

**Not changed:**
- **Pass counts.** E4B rover 11/12 and E2B rover 10/12, direct and through the console; E4B
  and E2B Bob 14/18 each (direct only). The setup-guide baseline (no model) is 7/12 and 11/18,
  with the same answers word for word.
- **Every failure is the same failure.** E4B still answers instead of drafting the 50 m
  `as-asked/drive.plan` and the as-asked `arm.pick`. E2B still drafts `drive.set` and `arm.pick`
  when an undeclared argument is asked for. Both still answer `draft/status.report` on Bob.
  E2B still answers it on the rover too. On Bob, both still draft `arm.home` for `arm.reach`.
  For `arm.place`, E2B still drafts `arm.pick`, and E4B still drafts `arm.place` with the
  wrong target (`red_lego`, not `white_bowl`), with the same arguments as before.
- **The signature never shows up in a reply.** No Gemma reply in either run mentions the
  manifest, its signature or a key resolver: 0 of 96 guided
  replies across the three 2026-09 runs, and 0 of 84 here.
  One E4B rationale says "for your review and signature", which is about the user signing a
  draft. The "INVALID" line was in every earlier prompt, and no model repeated it.
- **Speed.** It is within the spread of single readings on this Pi: E4B about 2.3 tok/s, E2B
  about 4 tok/s. Cold loads here were E4B 90.4 s and E2B 134.5 s direct, and 110.1 s and
  147.8 s through the console (93.9 s and 172.2 s in the first bench). A load from disk depends on
  what the page cache holds.

## What ran

- **Hardware and software.** Raspberry Pi 5, 16 GB, CPU only; Ollama 0.30.11 on loopback.
  Model digests `ee6656371218` (gemma4:e4b-it-qat) and `7fbdbf8f5e45` (gemma4:e2b), the same
  as in every 2026-09 run.
- **Direct.** Turns ran from 2026-09-27T17:21Z to 17:50Z, to Ollama's `/api/chat`, with both
  robots, guided, E4B first. Results are in `gemma-signed-manifest-2026-09-27.jsonl`
  (98 lines).
- **Through the live rover console.** Turns ran from 17:54Z to 18:07Z. Route: `POST
  /models/chat` on the rover's own console (`rover-console.service`, runtime
  `671bb64678f451127da65b57d2edc6d33f113dca`, pinned deploy) with its real bearer, read from a
  0600 file that was deleted afterwards. Rover suite only. Results are in
  `gemma-signed-manifest-console-2026-09-27.jsonl` (44 lines). The console's seal records
  `console_commit: not-recorded` because seal.py cannot read it, so it is given here.
- **Tool.** `tools/gemma-bench` at `d7932f2a33f5ce625951e8ee392b1ffb5b51f022`, tracked tree clean (`toolDirty`
  false), sources sha256 `bb4131ddf1822adc09fb7a670320d840a65434226dd00bfb408fb04e46f013d3` over 97
  files. Both run lines record them.
- **Settings.** Seed 42, `num_ctx` 8192, keep-alive 30 min, `think: false`, 5 s rest between
  turns, one model loaded at a time and unloaded after its block. The client ran at
  `nice -n 19` under `systemd-run --user --scope -p MemoryMax=2G -p MemorySwapMax=0`.
- **The setup-guide baseline** (no model) is in both files. Each run records it through the
  same suites.

### The manifests, checked (`--keys`)

The keys directory held two PUBLIC PEMs, fetched from the loopback key stub the gateways use
(`GET 127.0.0.1:8090/v2/keys/<kid>`). Each is byte-identical to the stub's file, and its SPKI
sha256 equals the pin. CastorKit's `StaticManifestKeyResolver` verified both footers before
anything ran. A manifest that fails refuses the run.

| robot | fixture sha256 | kid | key SPKI sha256 | check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| rover | `a486cfbc49953117...` | rover-manifest-2026 | `b1231a4f428f39f1...` | signed |
| bob | `32f3feb3b8312c46...` | bob-manifest-2026 | `ab79c3be808c029e...` | signed |

### The registry preflight (`--preflight`)

`robot-md-gateway/scripts/rrf_preflight.py` (feat/rrf-preflight `7072be4`) makes GET
requests only. It ran fresh at 17:12-17:13Z against the pins file. The bench-mode documents
are embedded whole in each run line, with their sha256.

| robot | document | verdict | what it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| rover | `preflight-rover-bench-20260927T171304Z.json` | `registry-resolves` | The public Robot Registry Foundation serves `rover-manifest-2026` under the pinned key; the manifest verifies under the registry's copy; RRN-000000000012 exists and is not revoked. The record is self-registered and marked `unverified`. |
| bob | `preflight-bob-bench-20260927T171306Z.json` | `local-keys-only` | The manifest verifies against the local key only: `bob-manifest-2026` is not registered (404). Findings kept from earlier today: RRN-000000000011 is `unverified`, RAN-000000000777 holds a different key from the one Bob's gateway signs with, and `bob-gw-attest-2026b` is unregistered. |

The live-mode preflights gave the same verdicts. The rover's live run also reports that the
drive backend matches the manifest and that envelope signatures are not enforced (by design
today). They are kept outside the repo because they list the host's network addresses. The
registry is a directory of identities and keys: it enforces nothing, and a verdict says only
which keys the evidence can be checked with.

## Results, this run

Latency columns are over turns that finished (answered or drafted), measured on the Pi: total = send to last byte, TTFT = send to first streamed token. tok/s = Ollama eval_count / eval_duration. Capability match counts finished cases whose expectation names a capability; well-formed counts drafts the validator accepted.

### Through the live rover console (2026-09-27 15:24Z, told INVALID, against this run)

- gemma4:e4b-it-qat: same pass/fail in 12 of 12 cases; the same final content, byte for byte, in 3 of 12.
- Instructions sha256 (first 12): gemma4:e4b-it-qat a25bc159a0ba -> e3b6b325364a.

The 15:24Z run and this one used the same console service, but at runtime 6ffa029 and
671bb64: the later commit only signs the console's drive check. Its E4B cases passed and
failed exactly as here: 11 of 12, failing only `as-asked/drive.plan`.

## What reached the robot

Nothing moved. The bench has no gateway client and no signing key. On the console route, each
turn made the console run its own drive check: one read-only `status.report` to the rover
gateway, which the console now signs as `rover-console-2026`. The rover's attestation export
went from 3390 to 3444 lines during the console run:
- The 54 new lines are 27 `status.report` intents and 27 `ok` outcomes (1 inventory check,
  2 warm-ups, 24 turns), all from caller `rover-console` at the read tier.
- There is no `drive.*` line. The last one is still from 2026-09-13.
- All 54 envelopes verify under `rover-console-2026`, and fail with `tool_name` changed or
  under another key.
- `verify_receipt.py` passes the last outcome (receipt v2), and the export's chain walk finds
  no gap and no break.

Envelope-signature enforcement stayed off throughout.

## Checking these files

Both results files chain every line (`seq`, `chain_prev`). robot-md-gateway's verifier checks
them with no key:

```sh
python scripts/verify_receipt.py --walk docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-2026-09-27.jsonl          # exit 0
python scripts/verify_receipt.py --walk docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-console-2026-09-27.jsonl  # exit 0
python scripts/verify_receipt.py --receipt docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-2026-09-27.seal.json \
    --pubkey docs/bench/keys/opencastor-bench-pi5-2026.pem                                         # exit 0
python scripts/verify_receipt.py --receipt docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-console-2026-09-27.seal.json \
    --pubkey docs/bench/keys/opencastor-bench-pi5-2026.pem                                         # exit 0
sha256sum docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-2026-09-27.jsonl \
    docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-console-2026-09-27.jsonl docs/bench/gemma-signed-manifest-2026-09-27.md
```

Each seal binds its results file and this summary by sha256. A walk exit of 0 means the
numbering is unbroken and every link matches. That is consistency, not completeness.

These results are sealed with an Ed25519 key held on the Pi that ran them (kid
opencastor-bench-pi5-2026; public key in the repo). The seal shows the files have not changed
since the `sealed_at` in each seal (2026-09-27). It does not make the numbers true of any other
device, and this is not a safety benchmark. The results are not filed with the Robot Registry
Foundation: the registry lists robot identities and keys, and a bench of drafts that were never
sent to a robot is not evidence about a robot.

## What went wrong, and what was changed to run it

- **The preflight gate could not pass on a real preflight.** `gemma-bench --preflight` looked
  only for a `manifest_sha256` key, the design's wording, and its tests used that invented
  shape. `rrf_preflight.py` writes `manifest.sha256` under a top-level `verdict`. So the first
  `check` refused with "carries no manifest_sha256": it failed closed, but it failed every
  time. Fixed in `d7932f2`, committed before the run so the run line names a clean tree:
  - The gate now also reads that shape.
  - Every refusal is kept: STOP anywhere, a digest of another file, no digest.
  - There are four new tests in the real shape; the tool's tests pass (28).
  - The fixed gate still refuses the 16:29Z rover preflight that said
    `STOP:fixture-differs-from-live-manifest`.
- **The key stub has no `/<kid>.pem` path** (404). It serves `/v2/keys/<kid>` as JSON, and the
  PEMs were taken from there.
- **Memory headroom.** E2B at 8K context holds about 6.6 GB. For these runs, about 0.95 GB of
  idle research files were moved off `/tmp` (tmpfs, held in RAM) and moved back afterwards, the
  same step the 06:18Z console run needed. MemAvailable during E2B turns stayed between
  1604 and 2067 MB. The bench's 1024 MB in-block floor was never reached and was not lowered.
- **The Pi.** There was no reboot (up since 2026-09-26 07:28Z). `vcgencmd get_throttled` read
  0x80000 throughout: the soft temperature limit had been hit earlier since boot, and no
  "happening now" bit was set. The black box logged a peak of 74.7 °C and a lowest 5V rail of
  5.13 V. No turn hit the 300 s cap, and no turn inside a block paid a reload.

## Reproduce

```sh
cd tools/gemma-bench
swift build -c release -j 2
python rrf_preflight.py --robot rover --mode bench --pins pins.json --out pf-rover.json   # robot-md-gateway
python rrf_preflight.py --robot bob   --mode bench --pins pins.json --out pf-bob.json
systemd-run --user --scope -q -p MemoryMax=2G -p MemorySwapMax=0 nice -n 19 env SWIFT_BACKTRACE=enable=no \
  .build/release/gemma-bench run --keys KEYS --preflight pf-rover.json --preflight pf-bob.json \
  --models gemma4:e4b-it-qat,gemma4:e2b --modes guided --robots rover,bob --out OUT/direct
systemd-run --user --scope -q -p MemoryMax=2G -p MemorySwapMax=0 nice -n 19 env SWIFT_BACKTRACE=enable=no \
  .build/release/gemma-bench run --console http://127.0.0.1:8004 --token-file TOKEN --keys KEYS \
  --preflight pf-rover.json --models gemma4:e4b-it-qat,gemma4:e2b --modes guided --robots rover --out OUT/console
python3 summarize.py OUT/direct/results.jsonl
python3 compare_console.py OUT/direct/results.jsonl OUT/console/results.jsonl
```

`KEYS` is a directory of public `<kid>.pem` files (the gateway key stub's layout).
`gemma-bench check` with the same options makes the run's refusals and runs nothing.
